REQUIREMENTS FOR PACKAGING
AND SHIPMENT OF RECYCLABLE MATERIALS
To ensure that your material
reaches us safely and to avoid any delay in settlement,
the following requirements need to be observed. These requirements
also help protect the environment, you as our supplier,
and to help keep pace with ever changing government regulations.
As the shipper, you are legally
responsible for compliance with all D.O.T. requirements
and, if applicable, hazardous waste regulations. Alpha/Fry
takes no responsibility for the material until it reaches
us and is in an acceptable condition to unload.
D.O.T. regulations supersede
Alpha/Fry requirements, therefore, when questionable situations
arise, the following procedures must be observed:
1.
All loose scrap or dross must be packed in sound containers
such as drums, buckets, and bins. You CANNOT use cardboard,
or containers such as Gaylord boxes, or wooden crates. All
material must be forklift unloadable and no unit containing
recyclable material may be filled to the top. Our requirement
is that you fill the container no closer than 6" from
the top of bins and drums; 3" in the case of pails.
2. Containers and packages
must be free of holes and deterioration. They must be securely
covered with lids. Whatever you choose, it must be tightly
fitted and able to withstand normal shipment wear and tear.
Most importantly, it should prevent release of the contaminated
materials into the environment.
3. All containers on pallets
must be securely banded by multiple bands and in multiple
directions. Most importantly, all pallets/skids must be
in good useable condition. No broken runners or boards will
be accepted.
4. Each container must have
labels that accurately reflect its contents. All other labeling
or markings must be removed or made completely illegible.
All D.O.T container regulations must be followed and all
paperwork must be clearly filled out and organized. This
includes:
A) Manifests (If required
by your state, it must be a Pennsylvania manifest.)
B) Alpha/Fry Purchase Order Number
C) Material Safety Data Sheets
D) Gross Tare & Net Weights
E) Number of Shipping Units (Example: 5 Drums on
2 Pallets)
F) Description of Material
G) Date Shipped
H) Carrier Used
5. No individual piece may
weigh more than 4,500 lbs. and the dimensions MAY NOT EXCEED
48"x48"x60" (height).
6. The outside of containers
and pallets must be free of any spillage. Also, the floor
of the truck must be clean to prevent contamination.
7. Material must be shipped
in a trailer that is in good condition, has sides, and is
covered. (Either by being enclosed or the use of tarps.)
Material must be secured so it arrives upright. Stacking
of material must be done very cautiously and, eliminated
if possible.
8. Alpha/Fry Reclaim reserves
the right to reject shipments if part of the shipment is
identified as lacking metal value.
In closing, Alpha/Fry Reclaim
would like to restate that if the shipment does not meet
the above requirements, it may be subject to rejection.
If the material arrives at our facility in an unacceptable
condition, Alpha/Fry's options are: to return the consigned
material to you (freight collect), or keep the material
and re-work it at your expense.
We establish these requirements
to help protect ourselves and you, our customer, from environmental
and regulatory liabilities. We look forward to strengthening
our relationship with you. If you have any questions, please
do not hesitate to call your representative in the Purchasing
Department or our environmental staff.
